on mondays i have even more time than usual to explore options for lunch. today, i was initially planning on going to burnt ends (what's up with their reservation policy for dinner, anyway?!) but googled and found out that they don't open for lunch on mondays. sigh- really wanted to try the pulled pork burger. so, my alternative was le comptoir for crepes (i found out that they do a $16 set lunch- sounds like a good deal to me). but after gym i suddenly developed a craving for new york deli type sandwiches- probably was influenced by a post i read last night regarding sweet spot deli. so i scraped my crepes plan and headed to marina bay sands.

i've actually heard about this place before, and wanted to try it too, but somehow forgot about it. when i read about it sometime back, they still had sweet spot deli, separate from sweet spot. but now, apparently, they've closed the deli and started offering some of the deli stuff at sweet spot.

when i got there, it looked like they only offered pastries and cakes, which was alarming given that i'd travelled there just for the sandwiches. but upon closer inspection, i realized that they did have the sandwiches after all. phew. they had quite a few sandwiches, including a pastrami filled one with coleslaw, russian dressing and gruyere, but what i wanted was the sour tang of sauerkraut (weird given that i don't even like sauerkraut with sausages). the only one that had sauerkraut was the corned beef with russian dressing and swiss cheese on rye, so i got that. they had two sizes- regular (70g) was $10 and large (110g) was $15. i was starving so... of course i got the large.

the sandwich was really good. the slight saltiness of the corned beef and cheese worked well with the tangy sauerkraut and crisp and light rye bread. all sandwiches should taste like this. i wished the portion was bigger though. having had something similar at sacha and sons sometime back, i had a valid comparison, and i preferred this. sacha's one was a more sizeable portion though, with coleslaw and pickles on the side to boot.

noticed that they offered a smoked salmon bagel for $14 too. might be back for it one day. seems like they only offer sandwiches up till 4.30 p.m., though.
