plain jane café, serangoon.

disclaimer: i'm very fond of swiss rolls (or any sort of rolls, for that matter- including peanut rolls, sushi rolls, burritos... the list goes on). so of course when i read about a café specialising in swiss rolls, i knew i had to go.

i actually went sometime last year, when they'd just opened. we came by just a little too late- it was a bit after nine, and they'd just sold out of their last piece of chocolate swiss roll. thankfully, though, the matcha ($5.90) and the plain ($4.90) were still available. they had an interesting range of teas available, and after smelling through all the samples, we decided on the pandan chiffon.

the cakes came simply plated on vintage looking plates- so pretty! for the portions, prices were steep, but it was so good i didn't care. good cakes are worth paying for!

the sponge was light and fluffy, and so was the cream. loved that it wasn't overpoweringly sweet (and it made me want to eat more). among the three of us, we shared two rolls, and quickly found that it wasn't enough... and so we ordered a third one. the tea, smelling lightly of pandan, went deliciously well with the rolls. yum!

i'm aiming to go back soon, for the nutella (!) and thai milk tea flavoured ones. it's a game of chance with the cakes though (which i suppose is part of the fun)- we enquired about availability, and it seems that going too early might mean that certain flavours wouldn't be ready. go too late, though, and it might just be sold out.

lady m, orchard central.

wanted some dessert after dinner, so we came by. had to queue for about fifteen minutes before getting a table.

spent some time deciding what cake to get. initially we only wanted to share one slice, but then got tempted by all the cakes that were available, so ended up deciding to get two to share instead. of course we had to have a crêpe cake- it was lady m, after all. the other choice was harder. it was a tossup between the gâteau aux marrons and banana mille feuille, which both looked interesting.
chose the chocolate mille crêpe ($9) and the banana mille feuille ($8.50) in the end.

the chocolate mille crêpe was awesome- fully understand why they're famous for their crêpe cakes. the first chocolate crêpe cake that i liked is from awfully chocolate, but this version is quite different from awfully chocolate's. this was creamier and smoother. still like awfully chocolate's, though- i guess it depends on which kind of texture i'm craving for. both are around the same price, but lady m has the added bonus of having the option of dining in, in a gorgeous space to boot.

the banana mille feuille was not as impressive. too much cream, though the cream was delicious. would've liked to have more sponge and banana instead of cream. the sponge was fluffy and awesome- found myself digging for it. probably just not my kind of thing, since i'm more of a cake than cream person.

already planning a return trip, to try more of their cakes! especially want to try the checkers, since i've tasted their sponge and know that it's good.

two bakers, horne road.

finally got to try two bakers- i've been meaning to for quite some time. was in the area, so we popped by. just in time, too, as they close early on mondays.

i was meaning to try their ondeh ondeh éclair, because 1. i love éclairs and 2. i love ondeh ondeh. sadly, though, it wasn't in the display case, and when we enquired about it, we were told that it'd been replaced by the chendol éclair.

since they were closing, they only had a limited number of bakes available. in fact, most items were out. but we were lucky- there was still one chendol éclair ($7.50) left! so we got that, and on the staff's recommendation, also got the last lemon tart ($7.50).

the chendol éclair was filled with coconut mascarpone cream, pandan jelly and gula melaka gel. the combination of flavours really reminded me of chendol. i loved the filling, but not so much the choux pastry, which wasn't as crisp or fragrant as i'd have liked.

the lemon tart was delicious as well. the pie shell itself was buttery yet light, breaking once my spoon cut into it. the lemon filling itself was delicious as well- oozy and tangy. i'm usually not a fan of sour desserts, but i enjoyed the lemon tart.

so glad i finally managed to try their bakes! will be back for more of their desserts.

shrove tuesday, toa payoh.

was in the area and my friend wanted some cafe food, so i did some googling and realised that shrove tuesday was pretty close to where we were. wasn't in the mood to be picky (because i was starving- it was three in the afternoon and we'd come from the gym) so we took the ten minute stroll over.

their menu was compact- couple of mains, with the main focus on dessert. i needed something savoury, so we shared the beef lasagne ($8.50) and the chicken pie ($6.50).

to be honest, i wasn't expecting much, since it was a cafe after all, and cafes aren't exactly known for their savoury dishes. but surprisingly enough the lasagne was a passable rendition, and we easily finished it. i didn't quite like the chicken pie though. too much cream and the crust wasn't nearly flaky and buttery enough, but we were hungry enough to finish it, too.

then we moved on to desserts! they were having a promo on the waffles- 50% off between 3 pm and 6 pm, so we only paid $2.50 for the waffle. added on a scoop of rum and raisin ice-cream for an additional $3.80 (extra $0.80 for premium flavour).

my friend was also tempted by the array of cakes on display, particularly the 7 flavour rainbow cheesecake ($7.50) and the thai milk tea cheesecake. really pretty, but i've never been a fan of rainbow cakes, because the logical part of me knows that it's just colouring. but while we were at the counter and deciding what to order, the girl at the counter told us that the different layers were not just colouring- each layer was a different flavour. that kind of sealed the deal for us.

it certainly was photogenic. i tasted each layer separately, and it was true that each layer was a different flavour! i was particularly enamoured with the yam flavoured purple bit. couldn't tell what the blue layer was supposed to be, but the taste of the other layers were prominent. in all, it was an interesting cheesecake, though i don't think i'd order it again.

their waffle was the light and crisp type. not my favourite type (creamier still takes the top spot) but it was alright.

we were still feeling greedy (and tempted by the display of desserts) after finishing the cake and the waffle, we decided to try another one. it was a tossup between the profiteroles ($10) and the matcha tiramisu ($8)- the matcha won in the end.

no regrets- it was a good decision. i especially liked the matcha crumble on top. it was a good play of textures- matcha crumble, creamy matcha-infused mascarpone and an alcohol-soaked cake layer beneath. the combination worked. it was probably my favourite dessert of the three. so glad we decided to be greedy (though it entails more jumping to work all the calories off).

not a very big cafe. quite liked the decor- all whimsical, with pretty prints. we were the only customers when we reached at three on a monday afternoon, but at about four, groups of people started streaming in.

spent a leisurely afternoon with my friend, chatting away and just enjoying the food. prices were also quite reasonable. will probably be back if i'm in the area. too bad it's not near the train station, though.

lady m, one fullerton.

came by specially for the cakes. despite lady m having been opened for a couple of years now, it's my first time trying it, for some strange reason. i've bought their cakes as gifts, but somehow, just never got around to trying it on my own.

my friend was aiming for the chocolate mille crepe, but then we realised that it was exclusive to the orchard central outlet. so he settled for the signature mille crepe ($8.50), while i got the green tea one ($9).

i loved the combination of the infinite-looking layers of pastry cream and crepe. the green tea powder was strong enough, yet not too overpowering. especially liked that it was only subtly sweet. it was no difficult task for me to finish the cake in its entirety.

the cakes are on the expensive side (and this is coming from a person who's used to paying a fair bit for desserts) but they are worth it. i want to try the checkers cake next. will probably pop by for a takeaway when i next have a cake craving.

gastrosmiths, beach road.

i've been wanting to try gastrosmiths for a long time, so when they had a groupon, i immediately bought it. finally made it there for dinner last night, after making a rather last minute reservation.

we had seats outside, but i didn't mind because the restaurant itself was small. the tables were close together, making it difficult for conversation. the outside tables were much better; spaced out. the weather was also cooling, so coupled with the fans they'd switched on, it was nice being seated outside.

i ordered the 220g angus 150-day grain-fed striploin ($33.50) and my sister got the signature hokubee beef bowl ($28). we were pondering over what appetisers to get, so we got the waiter to recommend, and ended up with the roasted bone marrow ($15).

i first had bone marrow at burnt ends, with their bone marrow bun, and loved it. so it was with that kind of expectation that i tried gastrosmiths' version. this paled in comparison. the bone marrow was good, but it got scary after a while- too much, i suppose, without anything to cut through the fattiness. the bread helped, but was way too light for that purpose. interesting dish to try, but we ended up not finishing it. too much for two people to share as it gets cloying after a while- probably better for a bigger group.

my striploin fared better. wasn't mindblowing, but it was a passable steak. would've liked a bit more char on the exterior, though. it came with pomme puree, roasted cauliflower and salsa verde- i know they're meant to be sides, but they really could've given more of it.

this was my sister's hokubee beef bowl, which she really liked. she's not a steak person, so for her to like it, it was a huge compliment. i tried a couple of bites of hers, and what struck me was that the steak was really juicy. the texture was excellent. i know it's manufactured to be so, by injecting oil into a normal cut of beef, but it was surprisingly good. it came with furikake rice and a wobbly onsen egg- i took a liking to the furikake rice. reminded me of wafuken's.

decided to add on another main, because we got tempted by the mee sua after googling what was good at gastrosmiths. we got the fisherman's mee sua ($25.50), which came topped with a delicious tumble of prawns, scallops and crabmeat. but the kicker was the bisque that the mee sua was soaked in- it was rich and full of seafood flavour. it reminded us somewhat of chili crab, but in a good way. so glad we decided to be greedy and order this- really good. i would come back just for this.

of course we had desserts. we got the valrhona lava cake ($15.50) and the beet & cheese ($14).

my sister was saying that $15.50 for a lava cake was really expensive, but then it came beautifully plated. we cut into it and it was perfectly oozy. it was a pretty good rendition of lava cake. even the vanilla bean ice cream that came with it wasn't an afterthought.

ordering the lava cake with the beet & cheese turned out to be a good idea. one was rich, while the other one was lighter. it was also gorgeously plated- like artwork. all the elements worked well together. smooth cheese parfait, sour beetroot gel, a light beetroot foam cake, vanilla bean ice cream, and a surprise- a thin slice of beetroot pickle. it was a play of textures and flavours that worked.

portions were on the small side, but everything was prepared with care. prices are on the expensive side though. not sure if i'll be back- if i do it'll be for the mee sua.
