baja fresh, rendezvous gallery.

i have this thing for mexican food, and singapore is surprisingly not lacking in good mexican options, so baja fresh has never been a place i was excited about trying. but then i saw that they were having a groupon promotion, and being the aunty i am, i decided that there was no harm trying it. i got a $30 voucher for $15, which essentially meant that everything we got would be half-priced. went along with X, pondering over the menu for a bit, before finally deciding on the pork carnitas tostada salad ($14.95). X got the pork carnitas quesadilla ($15.95 for a grande). both mains came with a side of tortilla chips, which X was extremely pleased about.

our food came almost immediately. X was taken aback at first by the presentation of my tostada salad, but she ended up liking it more than i did- i gave practically the entire tostada to her. my salad was alright- guacamole, sour cream, beans, pico de gallo and pulled pork piled on top of romaine. nothing particularly stood out- it wasn't bad, but it wasn't good as well; it was just meh. miles away from the other mexican places that i've tried in singapore- i was left wondering if they'd survive, given how empty the entire place was throughout our meal.

i ate two pieces of X's quesadilla in exchange for the tostada, and well, i suppose nothing much can go wrong with pulled pork and cheese. again, it was alright, but not particularly memorable as well.

i was pretty surprised to be charged for service- it was essentially a self-service restaurant. we went up to the counter to order, paid, and just waited for the food to be served to our table. salsas were available free flow on a counter.

with the groupon, we paid less than $10 per person, which i found reasonable. i'd be pissed if i were to pay full price for the food we had, though- for the same price point i'd be able to get much better mexican elsewhere. don't think i'll be back in a hurry.

coyote by spruce, phoenix park.

coyote's brunch menu (tex mex!) intrigued me enough to want to give it a try, so i snagged a $30 chope voucher and headed down on a sunny sunday afternoon for brunch with X. i've never actually been to phoenix park, so i didn't realise how far away from civilisation it was until i google-mapped it. happily enough there was a bus from somerset which cut down the walking (i'm really lazy about walking nowadays, because of the insane heat).

we reached at two-plus, and on approaching the restaurant, we were scared to see that there was al fresco dining (i believe in al fresco dining, but not in singapore). but thankfully they did have indoor seating as well (i quite literally heaved a sigh of relief upon seeing the indoor seating area). happily enough it was quiet when we reached; only a couple of other tables were occupied. we got a table by the window, and while the air conditioning wasn't strong, it at least beat sitting al fresco.

i'd already decided what i wanted, so i barely had to glance at the menu. as usual X was torn between a few choices, but eventually settled on a pulled chicken torta ($20). i got the huevos carnitas benedictinos ($19), which was basically a fancy way of saying eggs ben.

i was starving- i'd had an early breakfast, had hit the gym, and really needed my fuel; so it was awesome that the food came pretty quickly, and at the same time, too. i was impressed by the generosity of the pulled pork and chicken on our respective plates- particularly X's, because it was presented open face, so the pulled chicken appeared as... well, a big lump (in a good way).

i ended up quite liking my food. i was slightly dubious about the presence of hollandaise at first, because the pulled pork, which was cooked in bbq sauce, appeared sufficiently sauced. it turned out that the hollandaise actually matched pretty well with the pulled pork, tying everything together. X wasn't a fan of the corn waffle- i found it slightly limp but alright. enough to finish it, anyway. i just didn't like the poached egg. it was way overdone, so part of the yolk had already congealed.

tried a bit of X's pulled chicken, but i preferred the pulled pork. it was cooked in a different sauce from the pork- kind of a spicy, tomato-y sauce. i was surprised that X, who has a bird-like stomach not unlike C's, managed to finish the entire plate, given the generosity of the portion. i was startled by how full i was, too.

food was not spectacular, but not too bad. it was a nice, quiet place for a leisurely sunday brunch, though it's really a bit too out of the way.

excited to see a new mexican place at somerset, so i made C come along with me for dinner. being new, they had no website and no contact number for reservations, but i was in the area before dinner, so i popped by and requested to make a reservation. good thing i did, too, because the place was startlingly crowded for a sunday night.

i had my eye on the protein salad ($15.90), mainly because it boasted a jumbo serve of chargrilled chicken AND guacamole- yum! but when we were ordering, the waitress told us that all the salads weren't available. what?! that was something they should've told us the moment we were given the menu. so i settled for the pulled pork tacos ($13.50 for 3 pieces). C was hungry (for once) and decided on the carne asada burrito bowl ($14.60 for a la carte, $17.50 for a drink and side). interestingly enough they offer sets for all the mains, including tacos, which is a pretty good deal. the sides were things like tortilla chips with salsa, mexican rice and mexican fries. i we were greedy so we also got another set of tacos to share- the chargrilled chicken tacos this time ($12.50 for 3 pieces).

given that the place was crowded, the food came pretty quickly. the pulled pork tacos came first- saucy, delicious and... difficult to eat glamourously. i ended up fitting the taco into my mouth sideways, but the sauce still ended up dripping all over the tray. good thing the tacos were served on a tray, actually. but oh well, who cares about looking good when the food's so yummy? each bite was jam packed with flavour- from the pulled pork, pickled red cabbage, chipotle aioli and pico de gallo. couldn't help but compare it to vatos urban tacos, though, and i can't help but feel that i marginally prefer vatos urban tacos' version. still, it was good.

C's carne asada burrito bowl came shortly after. while it looked impressive, from the bite that i tried, i felt that the tacos were better. for one, the mexican rice was surprisingly bland- i was envisioning something with more flavour. it was just like regular white rice, actually. the beef pieces, while perfectly medium rare, also suffered from the same blandness.

luckily the chargrilled chicken tacos (which came much later) made up for it. it wasn't as full of sauce as the pulled pork ones, making it way easier to eat without making a mess, but it was just as yummy. the chargrilled chicken was really chargrilled- could taste the smokiness of the grill on the crispy chicken skin. i was initially hesitant about ordering it, because the menu stated that it was going to be spicy, coming with sriracha and all, but it ended up being just mildly so. glad we decided to be brave and ordered it.

their tacos are pretty good- i can see myself coming back for those. i also want to have the salad that i missed out on! across the table we spied people having quesadillas, and those look really good, too. i like this place- well, except for the service. no water was provided, we had to wave for ages to get their attention, and our table wasn't even kitted out with napkins (other tables were- i think they'd missed out on ours). but i guess they are new, so that kind of accounts for the less than stellar service. still, reasonably priced mexican food in an easy-to-get-to location? yeah, i'm sold.
