murugan idli shop, syed alwi road.

i have this ongoing thing about dosai- random cravings would suddenly surface, and i'd have to go eat some to soothe it. i needed a quick lunch in between classes on a sunday afternoon, and murugan idli shop happened to be (somewhat) on the way. since i've been meaning to try it for a while, i headed over.

as with most indian places, the place was sparsely furnished. and of course, i was the only chinese there (but after several such experiences i've gotten somewhat used to it). order chits were placed at each table, so i just had to check off whatever i wanted to eat and hand it over, saving myself the hassle of trying to pronounce stuff. of course i got the masala dosai ($4.70).

after i'd ordered, a huge banana leaf with four different types of chutney was placed in front of me. i had to wait quite a while after that before my dosai was served though (so much for a quick meal). my dosai was brought to me and placed onto the banana leaf.

as with most dosai, it was so long that its edges hung off the side of the plate. its texture was crisp, light and yet chewy, which made it a pretty good eat, though not mindblowingly so. the almost-creamy masala potato stuffed within was one of the better ones i've eaten, though.

what i really liked was actually the chutneys on the plate, especially the coconut chutney. i cleaned off all of it. i didn't know what the rest were, exactly, but i finished off another one entirely as well. yum!

might not make any great effort to come back again, but i wouldn't mind if i was in the area.

komalas vilas, serangoon road.

was in the lavender area, and was thinking about what to have for lunch. it suddenly struck me that little india was fairly near (a fifteen minute walk) so i headed over as i've wanted to try komalas vilas's dosai meal for a while now.

this is my second visit. the first time i went probably sometime last year. what prompted my first visit was reading that their masala dosai was good, but i didn't manage to get my hands on the menu when i went, so i just ordered off the board that they had tacked to the wall. that was why i never knew about the existence of the dosai meal until recently.

very confusing place if you've not been there before. i was asked to take a seat after being handed a menu, but when i tried to place my order, the waiter told me that all dosai/rice/chappathi meals were served upstairs. so i had to grab my stuff and head up.

i ordered at the counter first. after paying and being handed a receipt, i was then allowed to take a seat.

i got the dosai meal ($8.50). there was a choice between paper and masala dosai- of course i picked the masala dosai. it came served with a variety of side dishes, some of which i've never had before.

all masala dosais should be like this- crispy, light, non-greasy and generously filled with potatoes.

the vegetables included were interesting. i've never tried such indian dishes. one was long beans in yogurt, the second was a potato dish, and the third was beetroot and lentil (?). was slightly wary of the beetroot and lentil one at first glance, but after trying a few bites it grew on me. also especially loved the sambar- practically finished the entire plastic cup of it.

interestingly enough, i think it was like a sit-down buffet style place. one could ask for more of the accompanying dishes from the servers. i didn't, though- portions served were just right.

no frills dining at its best. food was good, and best of all, not seeped in oil. very satisfying; will be back for another of this.

met L for a quick lunch along east coast road. there are actually quite a number of indian places along east coast road, but we tried this one because i'd bought a groupon sometime ago.

we were served free appetizers of pappadum and various dips once we placed our orders. the pappadum was crispy and salty- just the perfect thing to start off our meal.

we got the non vegetarian tandoori platter ($26) to share, which came with four different kebabs of lamb, fish, prawn and chicken. good for trying a variety of things, but portion was small. the menu stated that it serves two to three, but we thought it was more for two small eaters (or maybe we just eat too much). also didn't expect the lamb to come as a patty. the best of the four was the chicken, which came crispy skinned and tender.

also ordered the murg tikka butter masala ($16) and to accompany it, a pesto naan ($4) and masala kulcha ($5). the gravy was good- aromatic, with cubes of tender, perfectly cooked chicken thigh. the naans were lighter and thinner than i am used to, but not in a bad way. couldn't really taste the pesto and masala though. perhaps should've just gone with plain naans since the butter masala was so strong in taste.

in all, a pretty satisfying meal. prices are on the high side though, especially considering the portion sizes. not sure if i'll come back if i didn't have a voucher, though food was admittedly delicious.
